- Summary:
- This case study reflects on research projects aimed to design a Virtual Reality (VR) intervention to enhance cognitive functioning and well-being among community-dwelling older adults, both with and without memory impairment, in developing countries. A six-step design framework was employed to guide the development process. A convergent-parallel mixed-methods approach was used to gather feedback from key stakeholders, including multidisciplinary experts and community-dwelling older adults, to inform prototype development and recruitment strategies as well as finalize research protocols. To evaluate effectiveness, a pretest–posttest control group design was implemented. Active recruitment strategies were applied to engage older adults living in the community. The effectiveness of the VR intervention was assessed using multiple indicators within a bio-psycho-social framework. Safety was also a major consideration, with attention given to physical and psychological effects as well as protection against risks and accidents associated with VR devices.
