Summary:

This research was commissioned by an integral financial development actor in the English-speaking Caribbean and was conducted by an international consulting team that had little cultural connection with the region. To compensate for this, a Caribbean liaison was added to the team and integrated into the processes when possible. In recognition of the possibility of conducting certain aspects of the research solo, the lead consultant developed strategies to help her build trust with important local actors, minimize power differentials, and enhance the research results. Thus, she spent a significant amount of time identifying her positionality in the research process, integrating reactions and concerns of partners and interviewees to her perceived positionality into the design of the research process, ensuring that the power dynamics at the local level did not exclude important voices, and embedding cultural sensitivity aspects into the research approach and questions. Cultural sensitivity in research refers to the incorporation of ethnic/cultural characteristics, historical factors and events, beliefs, and values into the design of the research process (Holmes, 2020). Through this case study, researchers and evaluators will learn why it is important to understand the local context, politics, and culture as well as how their positionality might impact the results of the research and diminish research utility unless it is adequately addressed to the satisfaction of local actors.
