This Case Study demonstrates how to reconstruct the 150-year demographic history of ethnic Chinese in Utah (1870–2020), a population often overlooked due to exclusionary laws, shifting Census classifications, and scarce archival records. Drawing on decennial U.S. Census summary files, microdata from the Integrated Public Use Microdata Series, the American Community Survey, and online archival sources, this Case Study illustrates how to recover and analyze the demographic presence of a marginalized immigrant community. This study employed four methodologic approaches: (a) harmonizing racial and ethnic classifications across Census years for comparability, (b) cohort tracking to examine long-term population dynamics, (c) using proxy indicators such as birthplace, gender ratios, and literacy to compensate for data gaps, and (c) linking demographic changes to key immigration policies, including the Chinese Exclusion Act (1882) and the Immigration and Nationality Act (1965). This Case Study provides practical guidance for graduate students and researchers in migration studies, historical demography, and data science. It highlights replicable strategies for integrating demographic data with historical context to uncover long-term population change and assess how policy and global forces shape immigrant community trajectories.
