Summary:

As a Black woman scholar working within predominantly white academic spaces, I am deeply committed to research that centers Black life and imagination. My personal and professional experiences have taught me that Black students are often navigating academic institutions (particularly within the era of anti-DEI legislation) that do not situate or celebrate their intersectional identities. The design of this project emerges from my own search for joy as a practice of resistance and as a way to reimagine what wellness and success can look like in the academy. Rooted in BlackCrit and arts-based methodologies, this research examines how Black graduate and professional students visualize and experience joy within facets of their lives. I was drawn to this topic after years of mentoring students whose brilliance often went unacknowledged and whose joy was rarely seen as scholarly. As several studies explore the challenges of Black students in academia, I felt it was also important to examine how Black students locate joy within these spaces through an asset-based frame rooted in their cultures. In response, I invited three other scholars to aid in designing a study that invited participants to co-create meaning through art (e.g., photography, poetry, digital media, sculpture) as a way of capturing racially embedded joy.
