Summary:
This case study describes the planning and implementation of a culturally tailored, barbershop-based readiness assessment for an HIV prevention program targeting rural African American men in Mississippi. Using community based, participatory research, faculty leaders trained student researchers to recruit men from four local barbershops to participate in the study. Barbershop patrons were asked to complete a pencil and paper survey adapted from validated scales, including the HIV Knowledge Questionnaire and Sexual Risks Scale, to access participants’ HIV knowledge, sexual behaviors, and readiness for intervention. Researchers were challenged with and addressed gender dynamics and participants’ mistrust of medical research during the data collection period. The methodology underscores the importance of flexible data collection strategies to accommodate a variety of educational and literacy levels.
