- Summary:
- Comics have long been recognized for their ability to communicate with diverse readers in accessible and emotionally resonant ways. Increasingly, these same qualities have made them valuable tools for sharing research findings and outcomes, supporting more inclusive forms of dissemination that center participants’ voices, reduce linguistic barriers, and extend pedagogical reach. Despite their affordances and growing use, there is little guidance for researchers on how to plan, design, and ethically implement comics-based outputs. This guide offers practical advice on how to use comics for ethical and inclusive research dissemination, with a particular focus on working with marginalized groups and sensitive topics. We outline key stages of the process, including identifying audiences and planning, working with participants and illustrators, translating qualitative data for visual storytelling, and ensuring accessibility and cultural sensitivity. Guidance also covers decision-making around narrative structure, aesthetic style, trauma-informed illustration, and permissions. Finally, we highlight common challenges relating to collaboration, timelines, and representational ethics, with strategies for addressing them in practice. We emphasize the importance of relational, iterative, and reflective practice as essential to producing visual outputs that honor lived experience. We anticipate that readers of this guide will gain insight into planning and delivering comics-based dissemination that supports the goals of inclusive, and ethical research. Having read this guide, readers should be able to . . .
