Summary:

Lived experience engagement is a complex and contested issue in research on human trafficking. A growing number of scholars recognize that researchers without lived experience may have critical gaps in understanding and appreciate the value of a lived experience lens. Many people with lived experience of trafficking are also trained researchers. However, participation in research can be harmful. Survivors may experience tokenization or gatekeeping, may be reduced to their lived experience of victimization without being recognized for the scope of their personal and professional backgrounds, and may receive inadequate credit for contributions. This case study explores approaches to lived experience engagement in a mixed methods study on forced criminality, which occurs when survivors are made to engage in illegal activities by their traffickers. Readers will learn about ethical considerations regarding lived experience engagement, as well as actionable strategies for meaningful inclusion of survivors across all stages of the research process.
