Summary:

With the growing number of people relocating worldwide to escape threats to their well-being, research on forced migration has expanded significantly over the past few decades. While such research is essential for systematically understanding this trend and for informing policy and humanitarian responses, conducting studies involving individuals from forced-migration backgrounds can be challenging, particularly with regard to the research process and ethical considerations. Methodologically, the forced-migrant community is often described as a hard-to-survey population due to difficulties in sampling, accessing, identifying, persuading, and interviewing participants. Ethical challenges also may arise from the vulnerability of this group, particularly regarding the power imbalance between researchers and participants and the potential for harm to participants or their communities. Drawing on examples from existing literature and my own experience, this How-to Guide discusses some of the key challenges during the research process and outlines strategies to address these challenges, highlighting both their strengths and their limitations.
