- Summary:
- Throughout this case study, grounded theory is the foundation for this comparative analysis of two Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) buildings in order to understand how LEED is redefining the design process in interior design. LEED is a certification process developed for owners, architects, interior designers, and engineers to use to design buildings with sustainability at the forefront. “The aims of grounded theory analysis are to develop inductive theory which is closely derived from the data rather than deductive theory which is supported by hypothesis testing” (Coyle, 2007, p. 7). Strauss and Corbin (1998) define grounded theory as “theory that was derived from data, systematically gathered, and analyzed through the research process.” This dataset explores how to utilize grounded theory, with examples from an original study involving the two LEED buildings. The methodology in this qualitative research was a grounded theory approach in which data was gathered through direct observation, interviews using an interview guide, and document review. Once all avenues of gathering data for this study were exhausted, the actual analysis process could begin. The coding process itself included three stages of coding: open, axial, and selective. This process helps identify categories and subcategories as they relate to the research questions and allows the data to help build the theory. After reading the dataset, these techniques we used in our research can be applied to your own qualitative research. The dataset file is accompanied by a teaching guide, a student guide, and a how-to guide.
