Summary:

Prior to 2016 gay and lesbian parents were banned from adopting in several of the United States. An often-cited concern of politicians enacting these laws was that gays and lesbians were unstable. As a result, my research team utilized existing data sets to compare outcomes of children adopted by same sex parents vs. those adopted by heterosexual parents. When it was initially published there was a variety of critiques from the LGBTQ+ community as a result of this comparison, for example, the assumption that heterosexuality is the standard by which others should be compared. However, the study soon became a legal tool in overturning gay and lesbian adoption bans and ultimately was utilized in the brief that resulted in marriage equality via Obergefell v. Hodges. This case study will discuss the legitimate critiques and concerns of comparing minority groups to majority groups when designing research projects. As well, the potential benefits and considerations of such comparisons will be provided.
