Summary:
This case study is based on original qualitative research using hermeneutic phenomenology to explore culturally situated meaning-making among diverse participants in the United States. Rooted in decolonial theory and relational ethics, the study engaged counselor educators, community practitioners, and cultural knowledge holders from Indigenous, African, Latinx, and Asian diasporic communities to understand how lived experiences are interpreted within a context shaped by structural inequities and cultural complexity. The case study addresses key methodological and practical challenges encountered in the implementation of hermeneutic phenomenology in cross-cultural settings. It highlights the demands of relationship-based recruitment, the need for culturally responsive data collection methods, and the limitations of institutional ethics protocols when applied to community-centered research. Particular attention is given to the researcher’s positionality, emotional labor, and the adaptive strategies necessary for conducting inclusive and ethically sound qualitative inquiry. This case study will be especially useful for postgraduate researchers, early career scholars, and practitioners engaged in qualitative, community-based, or decolonial research. Readers will gain practical insights into building trust with historically marginalized communities, navigating institutional constraints, and designing research that respects multiple ways of knowing.Ultimately, the study offers a reflective model for those seeking to conduct interpretive research in culturally diverse contexts. It demonstrates how hermeneutic phenomenology, when paired with ethical reflexivity and decolonial commitments, can support rigorous, inclusive, and transformative research practices.
