- Summary:
- "Naoko Fujimoto is a remarkable translator, and of Women: 20 Japanese Female Poets / 20 Waka Poems is a fascinating project. This short book is more than a translation-it's a very personal creative response, literary and artistic, to the poems and the brilliant women who produced them from the 7th - 12th centuries. Fujimoto has a beautiful ear for the music of poetry in colloquial English, and a deep feeling for the often rightly outraged rhetoric of the poems, many of which focus on "waiting for men," a pervasive injustice of the era. Her renderings of the poems are sometimes daringly impressionistic, in ways that seem linguistically surprising, as well as right and true. I'm very grateful that Naoko Fujimoto has celebrated this moment when women were the best writers in the world. -Patrick Donnelly, co-translator of the poems in The Wind from Vulture Peak, winner of the Japan-U.S. Friendship Commission Prize for the Translation of Japanese Literature"-- Provided by publisher.
