- Summary:
- This rare flyer advertises a May 28, 1961 lecture in Philadelphia by Black nationalist leader Robert F. Williams, held under the auspices of the Fair Play for Cuba Committee (FPCC) shortly after the Bay of Pigs invasion. The event occurred at a pivotal moment in Williams's life, only months before he fled the United States to avoid arrest. The flyer reflects Williams's growing support for Fidel Castro and the Cuban Revolution. As a founding member of the FPCC alongside prominent Black intellectuals including James Baldwin, John Henrik Clarke, John Oliver Killens, and William Worthy, Williams visited Cuba in 1960, where he described experiencing unprecedented racial equality. Following the U.S. government's restrictions on travel to Cuba, the FPCC recruited him to speak publicly in defense of the Cuban Revolution and to counter negative American media coverage. - D.
