Summary:
A hydrogen bomb is a device in which an uncontrolled, self-sustaining, thermonuclear fusion reaction is carried out in heavy hydrogen (deuterium or tritium) to produce an explosion. For a hydrogen bomb's nuclear fusion reaction to become self-sustaining, an enormous critical temperature must be initially attained via a fission explosive. Hydrogen bombs can be multistage devices or fusion-boosted atomic bombs. Fusion-boosted weapons are militarily more desirable than pure-fission weapons because they are generally lighter, more efficient, and more powerful. The total energy, or yield, of a typical fusion-boosted weapon is hundreds of kilotons, while for typical multistage weapons, the yield reaches into the megaton range.
