A historical biography of Xica Manicongo, revealed as the first documented transsexual in the history of Brazil and the Americas. Based on research at the Torre do Tombo National Archives, anthropologist Luiz Mott reconstructs the trajectory of the enslaved African woman who, in 1591, was denounced to the Inquisition in Salvador on charges of sodomy and wearing women's clothing. The book analyzes the gender duality related to the Quimbanda priestesses of the Kingdom of Kongo, the contemporary use of pajubá (a type of Afro-Brazilian religious language), and Xica's legacy as a symbol of resistance and legend for the LGBTI+ movement.
