Summary:
Paris of the 1920s-1940s had a vibrant artistic culture, much of it driven by the presence of migrant artists. This exhibition catalogue spotlights the Asian artists who lived, worked and exhibited in Paris in this dynamic period. Featuring the works of well-known artists like Foujita Tsuguharu, Sanyu, Xu Beihong, Georgette Chen and Le Pho, the catalogue also includes new research on the adjacent fields of dance and design. With critical attention to issues of colonialism, reception and migrant experience, this publication challenges ideas about the development of modernism in conditions of globalised exchange. With close to 200 artwork and 100 archival images, as well as translations into English of selected primary sources - such as artist letters, press reviews and exhibition texts from the period - the catalogue is a source of new comparative research on modern art.
