Biography/History:
Harriet Schutz Beresford and Susan Schutz were sisters born in Suffolk, England, daughters of John Bacon Schutz and Elizabeth Schutz (née Broadwater). The two women studied together under the watercolor painter John Varley after about 1802.
Summary:
Sketchbook of watercolors and drawings from a voyage to South and Central America. Many drawings are captioned in legible hand. At least two hands present. Captioned scenes include Rio Harbour; Cape Frio (Brazil); the coast of Brazil, Bahia and Rio de Janeiro; icebergs in the South Atlantic; the Falkland Islands (dated 11 April 1834); St. Felix (Pacific); gauchos (cowboys) on horseback roping a bull; Oporto; Arica, Peru; "Appearance of the Land at the entrance of 'Realajo'"; Tolay, Peru; "Burial Place"; Callao; Guaymas, Mexico; San Blas, Mexico; Earthquake at Conception, Chile; "Coast of Peru"; and two studies of women of Lima by a Peruvian artist, cornered in. One page is signed "R. Parker" and on the reverse there is a manuscript note reading "Oporto signed 'R. Parker' (who was he?)" in an unknown hand. Multiple pages left blank between sketches. Quoted text is directly from captions.
