"The shortest chapter of Exodus introduces three complex themes on the Israelites' departure from Egypt: the death of the firstborn sons, the expulsion, and the plagues inflicted on the Egyptians. How does the history of the transmission and redaction of Exodus 11 help resolve the associated exegetical and theological difficulties? This study proposes a process of resolution comprising four editorial stages. This redactional process, along with the evolution of the earliest Hebrew and Greek manuscripts, reveals the dynamic nature of the theological meanings attached to these motifs. It sheds light on the shift from the death of a single firstborn son to the death of all firstborns. The study also explores the ethical dilemmas arising from such a calamity--particularly when attributed to God. Finally, ambiguities surrounding the nature of the despoiling (loans versus outright gifts) and the departure from Egypt (flight versus expulsion) enriched the meaning of the Exodus throughout its textual and redactional development." -- Provided by the publisher.
