""Is it journalism or is it advocacy?" This is a question that is often asked when the subject of solidarity journalism is discussed. Solidarity is a risky term in journalism. Conventional news norms discourage journalists from displaying any political commitments and encourage practices aligned with detachment, neutrality, and objectivity. Yet solidarity journalism has never remained neutral when covering social justice issues that place people's basic human dignity at stake, nor, as Anita Varma argues, should it.
