Attributed to Phoebe H. Brown in "Sketch of the origin and character of the principal series of tracts of the American Tract Society" (American tract magazine, v. 6, no. 11). Sometimes attributed to Elias Boudinot, who translated the work into Cherokee in 1833.

"Poor Sarah" first appeared in the Religious intelligencer (New Haven) January 1-8, 1820. It was reprinted in the Boston recorder March 11, 1820, and was issued as a tract by several publishers during the same year.

Followed by a poem on Poor Sarah, p. [23]; "The Lord's call to his children", p. [24].

Two states of the wrapper noted. In one the cover title ends "in the life of Poor Sarah." and the bookseller's advertisement on p. [4] is for "Books suitable for Sabbath schools, for sale by Samuel T. Armstrong, no. 50, Cornhill, Boston." In the other state the cover title includes the concluding phrase "Founded on fact." and the advertisement is for "Valuable books, for sale by Samuel T. Armstrong, no. 50, Cornhill, Boston." Border ornaments and cover vignette differ.
