"Gender is an element of every human’s identity, intersecting with every aspect of human life. It is an enormous subject, one that crosses myriad intellectual fields and academic disciplines, triggering new ideas and vigorous discussions. Gender Justice features work that shines a light on issues and concepts related to gender expansion and liberation in various global contexts—past, present, and future. This project strives to provide an intersectional perspective with attention to how complex dynamics of power and privilege work alongside (and within) gender to create both opportunities and barriers to human flourishing. Justice is imagined capaciously in this project to acknowledge the many ways in which gender as a concept and genders as lived experience intersect with systematic workings of power—creating both barriers to and support for flourishing. In this sense, justice can be understood broadly and intersectionally through juridical, political, aesthetic, biopolitical, psychological, economic, and ethical lenses. What does it mean to lead a just life with regard to gender as it is lived, regulated, shaped and reshaped, practiced as a mode of resistance, and used as a means of oppression? In brief, the term “justice” is meant to move beyond liberal notions of equity and inclusion while acknowledging that such notions still do necessary, but not fully sufficient, work to help conceptualize a just world.
