- 我國以圖的形式描繪各地各民族生產, 生活、習俗等情况的史志類文獻古已有之. 《周禮·夏官》載 "職方氏掌天下之圖."《四庫全書》總纂官紀曉嵐說 : "考《南史》, 載梁武帝使裴子野撰《方國使圖》", "張彥遠《歷代名畫記》載梁元帝有《職貢圖》". 唐昭宗光化元年(八九八年), 描繪南詔歷史文化、政治經濟、社會生活、民族風貌的《南詔圖傳》繪製完成. 明代, 有《雲南諸夷圖》等諸多圖册流傳於世. 清代, 此類圖册更是豐富.
