Notes:
The harem, the most mythologized institution in Ottoman history, remained a space for centuries, besieged by both the West's orientalist fascination and the silences of indigenous historical narratives. Modern research, however, indicates that the harem was not merely a space for the sultan's private life, but a political space that permeated the inner workings of the state, an institutional structure where women participated in education, art, and practices of power. Örik's writings, written between 1939 and 1959, supplemented by archival documents from the period, her own memoirs, and personal observations, can also contribute to this understanding.
