Correspondence from the bishop of Jamaica, Christopher Lipscomb, to the secretary of state mainly concerning ecclesiastical matters such as the appointment, conduct and resignation of members of the clergy. Also includes: 'General Statement of the progress of Religious Instruction in the Diocese, number of Clergy, Churches, Schools etc.' Statement of the expenses incurred by the Parish of Hanover in the erection of an additional place of worship at Green Island, and application for procuring the assistance of the Government Annual return of the state of religious instruction: suggests appointment of a Church Building Board to superintend the building and alteration of churches and its funding Report of his visit to Grand Cayman: suggests division of the island into parishes Question of his jurisdiction over his clergy; with legal opinion and printed copy of the Jamaica Clergy Act of 1883 Lengthy [folios 122-235] and detailed memorandum by Henry Taylor, Colonial Office, in answer to the question 'What steps have been taken since 1823 for the promotion of Religion and Education among the Slaves, either by the Government here, or the Colonial Legislatures - especially in Jamaica; and what impediments exist now in the way of the clergy?'.
