Correspondence from the bishop of Barbados, William Hart Coleridge, to the secretary of state mainly concerning ecclesiastical matters such as his visits, and those of the archdeacon, to the various parts of his diocese, repairs to his official residence, the construction of churches, and the appointment, conduct and resignation of members of the clergy. Correspondence also includes: Papers relating to the religious instruction of prisoners Printed copy of 'A Charge delivered to the Clergy of the Church of England in British Guiana at their Metropolitan Church in Georgetown, Demerara, 23 March 1836 by the Right Reverend W H Coleridge, D.D.' Newspaper cutting giving the text of tributes to Edward Eliot, archdeacon of Barbados, upon his resignation. With correspondence concerning appointment of a successor Printed copy of a tabular statement of 'the number, cost &c of Churches, Chapels, Chapel-Schools, and School Houses in the Rural Deanery of Barbados for the year 1837' Printed copy of an 'Ecclesiastical Calendar of the Diocese of Barbados and the Leeward Islands for January 1838', including copy of the bishop's patent and certificate of consecration, a list of clergy and other miscellaneous information included for the use of the clergy. Cutting from The Barbadian of 1 August 1838 describing religious ceremonies held to mark the ending of apprenticeship, with printed copy of the form of prayer to be used throughout the island on that day A list of local acts relating to the clergy Brief extracts from reports concerning the working habits of the emancipated slaves Printed copy of 'A Charge delivered to the Clergy of the English Church in British Guiana at the Metropolitan Church in Georgetown the 18th July 1839 by the Right Reverend William Hart' Printed copy of an 'Ecclesiastical Calendar of the Diocese of Barbados and the Leeward Islands for 1839'. Contents include annexation of British Guiana to the Diocese, the archdeacons' patents, the succession of rectors in St Kitts and Nevis, and a variety of miscellaneous information.
