Summary:
Despatches from Governor Lord Harris [George Francis Robert Harris] concerning Edward Walkinshaw's ill-treatment of Indian immigrants. Despatch No 75: forwards correspondence with Mr Walkinshaw, proprietor of the Clydesdale Cottage Estate in the district of South Naparima. Also encloses the proceedings of an enquiry commissioned by the governor concerning Walkinshaw's treatment of the Indian Immigrants on the estate. Notes that as a result of the investigation the immigrants were removed from Walkinshaw's charge. Also states that there was 'considerable slackness€¦in many of the proprietors and managers of estates in complying with the regulations which require them to furnish clothing and other necessaries to the Coolies'. Despatch No 88: Forwards copies of the proceedings in two of the three cases of complaints made against Mr Walkinshaw by the Indian immigrants on his estate. Notes that the third case was abandoned due to lack of evidence. The first case concerned the assault of a labourer named Beechook. The second case concerned an inquisition into the death of a labourer named Kunduppa.
