- Dated '26 George II'. From 1709 onwards, any fundamental changes to the Company' s powers and privileges were made by Act of Parliament, but a few royal charters were issued in the eighteenth century that related to the Company' s powers in India. Madras had fallen to the French in 1746, and on its recapture in 1749 this new charter was issued to re-establish the town's rights.
