- Dated '3 James II'. The grant enabling the representatives of the town of Madras to administer civil law originated with the King; however, the Court of Directors feared that officials there might become too difficult to control if they were in receipt of a grant directly from the Crown, and in consequence a charter that recited the King' s approval was granted in the Company' s name. A copy of this document can be found in IOR/A/1/20A.
