A Cultural History of Higher Learning in the Renaissance is the history of both tradition and innovation. While the medieval legacy was substantial, higher learning experienced during the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries considerable changes, influenced by concurrent events that were part of a dynamic of transformation. The process of centralization in which States were engaged led to the proliferation and control of higher education institutions. The elaboration of humanism as a discipline, the invention of movable-type printing press, the 'discovery' (from a European perspective) of new worlds, the Protestant and Catholics religious reforms, all had major impacts on higher learning.
