Description: Letter from Olivia Baker, Ft. Lawton, Seattle, Washington; At sea, S.S. Wharton, ex. 'Southern Cross'; Hickam Field, Oahu, Hawaii, to her family, Jena, Louisiana. Baker writes the letter in four parts. The first part discusses Baker's trip from Randolph Field, Texas to Ft. Lawton, Washington. The second part discusses Baker's trip aboard ship as she traveled from Ft. Lawton, Washington to Hawaii. The third and fourth parts discuss Baker's time at Hickam Field, where she will be based as she is sent to Guam, Saipan, Manila, and Okinawa. She specifically mentions that, even though Japan has surrendered at this point, she will still be needed for several months. Each part of the letter also gives a good general description of what traveling in the Army Nurse Corps was like, as well as the areas at which Baker is stationed. A short snorter is included with the letter: 'O.R.D. Souvenir Short Snorter', AAF School Aviation Medicine, Randolph Field, San Antonio. Flight Nurses . . . yours is a fine heritage . . . you will follow in the footsteps of young women who have built the tradition of Air Evacuation. We at the school are proud . . . proud of you for the tasks you have completed . . . But much more so, proud of the tasks we know you will fulfill in the future.
