- Description: This series consist of 30 documents from Colonel Charles Steel’s time as a Japanese prisoner of war. The documents include handwritten and typed notes military correspondence recommending promotions and awards for specific servicemen and rosters documenting injuries and deaths within the 31st Infantry Regiment and II Philippine Division inside POW camps created by Steel. The bulk of the documents were written when Steel was at Hoten Camp No. 1, Mukden, Manchuria, and were not written by Steel.;Documents from the service of Colonel Charles Lowndes Steel, commander of the 31st Infantry Regiment from December 1941-March 1942 and the II Philippine Corps Chief of Staff during the Battle of Bataan. He was a Japanese prisoner of war from April 1942-September 1945. The collection is arranged into two series: I. Military documents, 1941-1942 and II. Prisoner of war documents, June 1945-September 1945.
