Summary:

Robert Cardenas was born in Mexico and moved to San Diego when he was a child. He enlisted in the California National Guard and from there became an aviation cadet. Cardenas was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Army Air Corps in 1941. Cardenas served with the 506th Bombardment Squadron, 44th Bomb Group out of England. His B-24 was shot down and the crew parachuted to safety. Cardenas landed in Switzerland and later escaped to France. He returned to England and then the U.S. After the war Cardenas became a test pilot for bomber aircraft until he served in the Korean War and then the Vietnam War. In 1973 Cardenas retired as a brigadier general.
