Summary:
Preston Welch was drafted on 1 August 1943 and served in the USMC as an infantryman in the 28th Marine Regiment, 5th Marine Division. He was deployed to Iwo Jima and fought on that island for 23 days until he was wounded by rifle fire and grenade shrapnel while recovering an abandoned machine gun. He was evacuated to the United States and discharged from the military in October 1945.
