Summary:
Stuart Gardner Hunt was born in Montreal, Canada in 1923. He had dual citizenship in the United States and Canada. In September 1942, after being rejected by the USAAF after the attack on Pearl Harbor, Hunt joined the Royal Canadian Air Force. He was commissioned a Pilot Officer in July 1943 then joined 425 Aloutte Squadron stationed in Yorkshire, England. Hunt was shot down on his 14th mission, captured and imprisoned in Stalag Luft III. As the war in Europe neared its end, Hunt endured two grueling forced marches, before being liberated by the British Second Army in May 1945. He was sent to England and when the war ended in 1945, he was discharged from active duty and returned home to the United States.
