Summary:

Curtis Bodison was born in April 1926 I in Cottageville, South Carolina. As an African American, times were very difficult for the family living in the south. He was drafted into the United States Army in 1945 and sent to Fort McClellan for basic training. His unit, which was segregated from the white soldiers, was sent to the Philippines. Once they arrived in the Philippines, they were responsible for flushing out Japanese who were entrenched in the Jungle. He remembers it being very difficult and was always concerned for his safety. When the war was over, he was transferred to a unit in Japan which drove trucks consolidating Japanese prisoners to a central location. He remembers how nice the Japanese were. He was impressed with their education and ability to speak English. He was discharged from the army at Fort Bragg in 1947 with the rank of private first class and returned home to Cottageville, South Carolina.
