- Arnold Debrick was voluntarily drafted into the Army in 1944 and took his basic training at Camp Hood, Texas. after basic training he was sent to Europe as a replacement and ended up in Company B, 9th Armored Infantry Battalion, 6th Armored Division. His first combat experience took place in January 1945 during the Battle of the Bulge. During the battle he developed trench foot and frostbite on both his feet and was hospitalized for two months. He returned to the 9th Armored Infantry Battalion in March and was with that unit when it helped liberate the Buchenwald concentration camp. After the Germans surrendered, Debrick returned to the United States and was discharged from the Army in 1946 with the rank of corporal.
