Summary:

Shirl Hendryx was born in December 1923 in Indianapolis, Indiana. His family moved around a lot because they couldn't always afford rent during the Great Depression. Hendryx was attending Indiana University and slated to be drafted in February when he was rated as 4F due to a punctured eardrum. He decided to go into the American Field Service and found a group forming in India/Burma. Hendrix worked as an ambulance driver attached to the British 14th Army armed with only a sack full of grenades. He was discharged from the American Field Service in 1944 and joined the Merchant Marines while in Calcutta. Hendryx's job aboard the ship was to pull the oil out of the tube along the engine to the propellers. He made it to Hawaii in 1945 and was released from duty. Hendryx pursued his career as a writer, motivated by his interactions with the other men in the American Field Service.
