- Robert Friend served in the USAAF then USAF from 1942 to 1971. During WWII, Friend flew P-39, P-47, and P-51 fighter aircraft in aerial combat against German forces. During his combat tour, Friend flew missions from bases in North Africa and Italy and scored two aerial victories. After the war Friend remained in the service and held various duties in the US. During the 1950s and 1960s he worked on and led numerous projects for the Air Force including Project Blue Book. He deployed to Vietnam during the war there then returned to the US to finish out his career. He retired from the US Air Force in 1971 with the rank of lieutenant colonel.
