Mario Castellani was born and raised in Kansas and California. He was drafted into the Army and served as an infantryman in Company F, 2nd Battalion, 34th Infantry Regiment, 24th Infantry Division and took part in the Battle of Zig Zag Pass and other combat actions around the Philippines. Castellani was discharged from the Army in 1946 with the rank of sergeant.
