Summary:

PFC Robert Hasewinkle was born in December 1925 in Indianapolis, Indiana. His father died when he was six and the family moved in with his grandmother. It was a very difficult time. He enlisted in the United States Army upon graduating from high school. After completing his basic training in Texas, he was sent as a replacement soldier joining Company C, 1st Battalion, 307th Infantry Regiment, 77th Infantry Division and served as a rifleman carrying a M1. He landed on the Island of Okinawa, after a few weeks of fighting had taken place. During the assault on Ishimmi Ridge, he was wounded and evacuated to a hospital ship and then sent to Guam. He was in a hospital in Hawaii when the war ended. He was discharged in 1946 and returned home to Indianapolis, Indiana.
