Wilbur McDougal, known to friends and family as Mac, was born and raised in South Bend, Indiana where he graduated high school in 1943. He worked at the local Studebaker plant in South Bend before the war and then was drafted into the Navy. He was inducted in Toledo, Ohio and then went through training at Great Lakes, Illinois. He served during the war on the home front in the Ninth Division of the Naval Ammunition Depots at Mare Island and Vallejo, California.
