- Robert Kakuska served in Army as a gunner on a .30 caliber machine gun crew in the 96th Infantry Division. He landed on Okinawa about 30 days after the invasion of that island and spent 57 days on the front lines. Kakuska returned to the United States after the war and was discharged from the army in 1946 with the rank of staff sergeant.
