- Mary Knickmeyer graduated from a teacher's college in Missouri in 1943. Before starting her job as school teacher, she and a girlfriend decided to travel to Bremerton, Washington for the summer to work in the Bremerton Navy Yard. Knickmeyer worked at Bremerton for two and a half months as a fork lift operator during the summer of 1943. Her job was to pick up pallets of supplies from a storage area and deliver them to naval vessels in the yard that were preparing to head out to sea. Knickmeyer and her friend made the decision to travel to Bremerton partly out of a sense of patriotism and partly for the adventure.
