Summary:

Richard Thrasher was born in Oklahoma on 10 November 1920. His father was a refrigerator engineer. He enlisted in the US Navy in January 1942 and was sent to San Diego for boot camp. He spent about two and a half years in hydraulic course, instrument repair and other things before requesting sea duty aboard a cruiser in 1944. He was assigned to the USS Chester (CA-27) as a Senior Petty Officer and saw combat at Iwo Jima and Okinawa. He then went to Saipan, the Aleutians and pulled occupation duty in Northern Japan. He attended aeronautics school and rejoined the Navy in 1946. When Korea started, he was sent to VP-46 and served for 5 years as a flight engineer. He made a career out of the Navy and then worked for Lockheed Martin, then United Aircraft making boosters for the Space Shuttle program before being laid off. He also was a wind tunnel operator for NASA.
