Summary:

Vera Freed was born November 13, 1935 in Breslau, Germany which is today Wroclaw, Poland. Her family was Jewish and waited until the 11th hour to flee from Nazi Germany. Her father was a doctor and during World War I he served in the German Army. When the Nazis came to power he was thrown in prison for a year. When he was released he took his family and boarded a ship for North America. All of Vera's mother's family stayed behind and except for two cousins would all die as results of the Nazis. On their voyage to North America, Vera's mother became separated from the family and they continued on without her. They were unable to enter the United States because the quota for Jewish immigrants had been met. They made their way to El Salvador, where they had relatives. This became their new home. Her mother eventually found her way to El Salvador and Vera said "it was one of the happiest moments of my life". Vera also said there was a sense of "melancholy that always existed in our house." She has never seen any of her relatives from the old world.
