- Barbara Folk was born and raised in Riverhead, NY where after graduating high school in 1941, she worked for a telephone company and then for Grumman during the early part of the war. While at Grumman, Folk worked in the toll crib and press department (such as drill press, etc) before joining the Navy and becoming a WAVE. She was sent to Norfolk Naval Air Station and served as Master at Arms during her time in the service. She recalled being in Times Square on V-J Day when the famous photo of the kissing nurse and sailor was taken.
