Electrician Mate Third Class Charles Greenawalt was born December 18, 1925 in Lebanon, Pennsylvania. His father was a roofer and stayed employed during the depression. When the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor he went to the recruiting station to enlist; he was 16. He was told to go home and come back when he turned 18. On his 17th birthday his parents signed for him to enlist in the United States Navy. He was sent to Sampson, New York for his boot camp and after completing basic training he became an electrician. After completion of his training, he was sent to England and assigned to LST 333. Their mission was to ferry supplies from ships anchored in the English Channel to Utah Beach. On one occasion their ship collided with a Liberty ship. They went ashore at Utah Beach while their ship was repaired. In 1945 while assigned to LeHarve, France with the same mission. After the war he returned to the United States and was assigned to Green Cove Springs, Florida "mothballing" amphibious ships. He was discharged in 1946.
