- Summary:
- Second Lieutenant Theresa Anderson was born April 22, 1920 in Waterloo, New York. She was one of twelve children and when she graduated from high school she attended nursing school. In 1942 she enlisted in the United States Army Air Force and was sent to Louisville Kentucky to attend Air Evacuation School. When she completed her training she was assigned to the 349th Air Evacuation Group and stationed at Port Moresby in New Guinea. From there she flew aboard a C-47 to various islands in the Pacific to evacuate the wounded from the combat areas to hospitals. She served as the nurse aboard the planes transporting the wounded men. She seldom knew where they were going. They were just told the day before they would be flying in the morning. On two occasions she was stationed at Biac and Fitchhaven and flew from those islands to evacuate the wounded. She carried a 45 fastened to her waist and on a couple of occasions the plane she was on came under attack by Japanese anti-aircraft artillery. She married a pilot who flew one the C-47 she had flown on. She was discharged in 1945.
