Summary:

Wendell S. Anderson enlisted in the US Navy in September 1943 wanting to be an aviator. During his examination to enter the Navy, it was discovered that he was color blind and his service would be limited. He ended up as a Seabee (in a Naval Construction Battalion) and was sent overseas in 1944 aboard a Norwegian ship, the HMS Torrens. He spent time in New Guinea and at the Palmolive plantation's coconut groves. After a brief stay there, he and his unit, the 33rd Special Naval Construction Battalion, went to Hollandia where they fought against Japanese Zeros at one point. They eventually made it to Samar in the Philippines and he was there until about 6 months after the end of the war when he returned to the United States.
