Summary:

Rebecca Elizabeth Loefler was born February 15, 1934 in Mobile, Alabama. She was seven years old and attending a basketball game when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor. All of her uncles fought in the war; so, her mother and aunts moved into a single family home during the war. Everything was rationed. They seldom had sugar or butter and ate mashed potatoes with tomato gravy all of the time. Air raid drills were conducted frequently. When a drill occurred during school, everyone climbed under their desk. If a raid occurred during the evening, they would turn off all the lights and close the curtains. On the weekends they rode in the wagon and collected tin, metal, and plastic which was recycled for the war. One of Rebecca's uncles was a Merchant Marine and would occasionally bring back special treats to them. She remembered when the war ended everyone ran outside and a big celebration was held in the streets.
